Returnees host luncheon for SVG senior citizens

Senior citizens in and around the Central Leeward constituency were treated to a special luncheon at the National Insurance Service (NIS) Golden Years Activity Centre in Cane Grove, Buccament.
The luncheon was hosted by the United Returnees Association and took place on Thursday, December 13.

Master of ceremonies, Nelson Samuel, said the Association catered for senior citizens who attend the NIS Cane Grove Centre and guests from nearby communities. Samuel stated that the United Returnees Association is built on the principle of “when you love, you give.” He expressed appreciation to all who were in attendance.

Deputy Director of the NIS Mineva Glasgow expressed thanks to the United Returnees Association for hosting the luncheon. Glasgow said their chosen theme is very timely, “Bridging the Gap in the Country and the United Returnees Association by Working with the Elderly and the Youth in Order to Keep the Youth” is “compelling and relevant particularly at this time when there seems to be a widening of the generation gap and the whole idea of community spiritedness and togetherness seem to be losing ground”.

Glasgow further said, “there is a richness in [our] cultural heritage that must be preserved and passed on to the next generation.” She said she looks forward to the time when youths and the aged can work harmoniously in the community. The Deputy Director of the NIS used the opportunity to urge the United Returnees Association to extend an invitation to youths to attend their future events.

Public Relations Officer of the United Returnees Association, Hewitt Baker, gave an update on the construction of their Club House in Buccament. Baker said the building process is going smoothly, however he is appealing to the public for assistance with the completion of the building. The Club House will serve as a meeting place for the Association and a place to host their events.

Reverend G. Ballantyne offered prayer on behalf of senior citizens. This is the 13th year that the United Returnees Association is hosting the luncheon for senior citizens.
