Government creates 83 new public service jobs

Eighty-three new positions have been created across the public service, which Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves says would “…enhance service delivery to the citizens of St Vincent and the Grenadines.”

As he laid out the Estimates in Parliament last Monday, the Prime Minister said the Ministry of Health has been allocated two new posts to strengthen hospital and community health services, as the Modern Medical Complex in Georgetown and the polyclinics at Buccament and Georgetown become operational this fiscal year.

Additional staff nurses were also provided to the mental health rehabilitation services, he said.

Seven posts have been created within the Ministry of Economic Planning, which would mainly enhance the capacity of the labour and safety inspectorate at the Labour Department in preparation for the implementation of the impending Occupational Health and Safety Reforms.

Six posts have been allocated to the Ministry of Finance, aimed at strengthening the administrative capacity of the Inland Revenue Department.

Gonsalves noted that the Aviation Services Programme, formerly ‘Airports’ in the Ministry of National Security, received eight new posts in the area of meteorological and aeronautical services to support the operations of the Argyle International Airport (AIA).

He pointed out that some 50 jobs were removed from this service and most of these persons have been recruited by the AIA.

The foreign policy and research staff at the Ministry of Foreign affairs was augmented by five new positions at various levels.

The remaining positions are: one executive officer at the Commercial and Intellectual Properties Office, two school bus drivers in the Ministry of Transport and Works, one driver in the Ministry of Housing, a co-ordinator for Cultural Industries for the Department of Culture, an Investment and Promotions officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Gonsalves stated that the investment and promotion officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would be located at the office of the Consul General in New York to assist further with trade promotion and investment promotion and that person would work in concert with Invest SVG, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Planning.(CM)
