MP, senator condemn robbery of salesman

Parliamentary representative for North Leeward Roland Patel Matthews and his opponent in the last general elections, government senator Carlos James have both condemned an incident that took place in North Leeward on Tuesday, August 16 during which a salesman from the St Vincent Brewery Ltd was shot and robbed.

In a release, Matthews, who is presently out of state, said “I condemn to the fullest extent this glaring,{{more}} vicious and selfish criminal act which attempts to tarnish the name of the constituency of North Leeward.”

The parliamentary representation said he has known the driver who was robbed for several years and has done business with him on countless occasions.

“I, therefore, take this opportunity to wish him a speedy recovery,” Matthews said.

“I hope that the perpetrators of such a vicious criminal act will be swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”

Matthews also noted in the release that although he operates a business in close proximity to where the incident occurred, the robbery did not take place at his business place as had been reported. He encouraged anyone with information pertaining to what he described as a “cowardly act” to cooperate with the police.

Meanwhile, James, in a separate release said, “This incident is very unfortunate and I have since contacted Mr Pope and expressed my concern regarding his unfortunate ordeal. I am hopeful that the police will investigate this matter thoroughly and the perpetrator or perpetrators will be brought to justice.”

According to Senator James, North Leeward is known for its warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage. “I speak for the majority when I say there is a great level of hospitality and kindness amongst the people of North Leeward and we are all condemning this senseless act of violence against Mr Pope. I wish him a speedy recovery and he would be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” James said.
