Insurance Institute of SVG elects new executive

A new executive has been installed to lead the Insurance Institute of St Vincent and the Grenadines.

At a meeting attended by representatives from most insurance companies, agents and brokers last Wednesday, August 5, Michele Morthely was elected president.{{more}} Also included on the executive were Micah Cumberbatch – vice-president; Nancy Ferrari – secretary; Kim Gun Munro – PRO; Diane Quammie – social secretary; Simonne Goodluck – education officer; Terron Davis – librarian and Joanne Hazell – treasurer.

A release from the Institute said its main objective has always been to “promote, encourage and organise training and education in all aspects of insurance all levels, and to ensure compliance with insurance legislation and the regulators.”

The regional institutes fall under the umbrella of the Association of the Insurance Institutes of the Caribbean (AIIC), based in St Lucia. The AIIC was established as a result of the need for a Caribbean qualification in the region, especially since the CII (Chartered Insurance Institute) of the UK had forged closer ties with Europe and it was found that the syllabus was becoming more irrelevant to the Caribbean, and more importantly the cost was becoming prohibitive. At present, AIIC qualifications are recognized by the UWI School of Business Studies, Cave Hill, Barbados.

At last Wednesday’s meeting, certificates were handed out to successful candidates. St Vincent and the Grenadines had a 95 per cent overall pass rate, with four persons receiving prizes for outstanding results. Distinctions were awarded to Nancy Ferrari for the Foundation Certificate and to Kim Haydock for the Motor Certificate. Credits were awarded to Kerry Foster and Monisia DeGrads for the Foundation Certificate.

The next set of courses is expected to be held in September, 2015.
