KGS emphasizes healthier living on World Food Day

The Kingstown Government School (KGS) is showing the public that farming is beneficial to all persons in society.

Pupils of the primary school celebrated World Food Day last Friday, with an exhibition which included fruits, vegetables and products that were made using locally grown items.{{more}}

Public relations officer for the fund-raising committee at the KGS Carmie Williams told SEARCHLIGHT that the project, which had good support from parents, is a part of the annual celebrations that are held at the school on World Food Day.

“It is the annual World Food Day and we have always been a part of it and the children and parents are very supportive and today is no different,” she said.

The 2014 World Food Day theme was “Family Farming: Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth.”

However, the school generated their own theme: “Family Farming: More Saving, Healthier Living,” in an effort to highlight that using more locally grown products can be cost effective and healthy for everyone.

“I hope people continue with the theme,” Williams said.

“It is true. When you farm, do your own family farming, you’re saving that money and you have your food as fresh as possible. It really makes for a healthier living. I hope people in St Vincent and the Grenadines and throughout the whole world do that.”

At midday, parents and members of the public were invited to purchase items that were on display, which included cakes, fruits, vegetables and other locally made products.

“It would go towards our school fund-raising. We are really working towards getting whiteboards at the end of the year for the beginning of the new school year. Hopefully this will be a start up,” Williams explained.(BK)
