National Ozone Unit holds World Ozone Day Fair today
A World Ozone Day Fair will be held today at the Methodist Church Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.{{more}}
The fair will feature Environmental Education booths, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning companiesâ booths, with the highlight being presentations from schools around St Vincent and the Grenadines, showcasing their understanding of the effects of ozone depletion and its protection.
Todayâs activity is being staged by the National Ozone Unit within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, to commemorate World Ozone Day 2014.
On September 16, World Ozone Day, the National Ozone Unit hosted a Cocktail Ceremony which featured the certification of 30 technicians who were trained in hydrocarbon technologies; the launch of five Recovery Centres around St Vincent and the Grenadines for the collection of ozone depleting substances; and the launch of an Adult and Childrenâs Ozone Educational Handbook.
These events highlight the achievements of St Vincent and the Grenadines in the fight against ozone depletion and its restoration, in keeping with the yearâs theme âThe Mission Goes Onâ.
The rapid depletion of the ozone layer received much needed attention on 16th September, 1987, when the Montreal Protocol received signed commitments from countries around the world fighting to legally reduce and eventually eliminate the use and importation of ozone depleting substances.
The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is widely recognized as one of the most successful environmental treaties in history. It establishes legally binding controls on the national production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances, and enjoys universal ratification by 197 parties.
St Vincent and the Grenadines signed on to the Montreal Protocol on 5th September, 1996, and has since been devoted to the eradication of ozone depleting substances from the ports of St Vincent and the Grenadines and throughout the country by providing alternative ozone friendly refrigerants and through public awareness projects.
