Distribution of relief supplies almost over – Francis

The distribution of stoves, refrigerators and mattresses to persons affected by the Christmas Eve flood has been a completely transparent process.{{more}}

This declaration came from the Minister of Transport and Works Julian Francis, on Tuesday, March 18, while speaking at a press conference, where he revealed that the distribution process was almost over.

Francis noted that so far, approximately EC$775,000 has been spent on the exercise.

“We are almost complete on that exercise. 606 families have been touched in the affected areas,” he revealed.

In addition, the Minister, who was appointed as chair of the distribution committee, pointed out that 186 fridges, 246 stoves and gas connections, and 597 mattresses have been distributed so far.

Francis noted that the entire process was done out in the open for everyone to see.

“We not hiding behind anybody. We not bringing in stuff and just delivering it at areas unknown to certain individuals. This is a completely transparent exercise,” he said.

The funds that were used to purchase refrigerators, stoves and mattresses were donated by Dennis O’Brien, a principal shareholder of the mobile service provider, Digicel.

During the press conference, Francis noted that only local suppliers were used to purchase the items that were distributed.

Areas where persons benefitted from the distribution include Buccament, Cane Grove, Spring Village, Coulls Hill, Troumaca, Rose Hall, Dark View, Petit Bordel, Chateaubelair, Fitz-Hughes, Georgetown, Sandy Bay, Owia and Fancy. (BK)
