Stitching with Church of Latter Day Saints

Through an initiative being spearheaded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a number of women in St Vincent and the Grenadines are learning to become self-sufficient.{{more}}

On Tuesday, 13 women graduated with a new skill, after taking part in a six-week sewing course.

Sister Kathy Bird, one of the facilitators, told the ladies how proud she was of them completing the course.

As she addressed the graduates, who were all dressed in shirts that they had made themselves, Bird told them that they had now learned to serve themselves.

“You never get too old to learn. I just want to tell you how proud I am of each of you,” Bird said. “You know that I love each one of you and I enjoyed…sharing talents with you and watching you learn and grow.”

In her brief remarks, Ossie Small, who was also a facilitator at the workshop, thanked the women for taking advantage of the opportunity that was given to them. As she reminisced about the classes that had taken place, Small stated that she felt like a proud mother.

“As I looked at each of you and the work that you have created, it makes me feel like a mom. That’s what sewing does. It’s an exciting thing; that as you learn to create things for yourselves, you don’t want to stop,” she said.

As part of a service project attached to the course, the ladies were required to make newborn kits, consisting of a blanket, diaper and nightgown, which will be donated to someone.

Additionally, each graduate received an iron, sewing machine and transformer for completing the course.

This was the first of four courses, which is expected to benefit at least 50 persons in the Vincentian society.
