LIME aims to improve the quality of 2013 Lions Club South Public Speaking Competition

The public can expect an improvement in the quality of presentations in this year’s Lions Club South Public Speaking Competition, with the announcement of initiatives aimed at better preparing the participants.{{more}}

Leslie Jack, country manager of LIME – one of the sponsors of the competition – announced earlier this week that the telecommunications company, as part of its sponsorship package, would be introducing initiatives aimed at improving the standard of the competition.

“We have made a few suggestions, which we do expect the Lions Club team will follow on,” Jack said at a press conference.

One of the proposals, according to Jack, would be a workshop for teachers and participating students, on the fundamentals of public speaking.

“We think that it’s really necessary to maintain and improve the general standard of the competition,” LIME’s country manager said.

He said coaches have been identified to work with the finalists; it is expected that these persons will complement the normal school structure put in place to assist the students’ preparations, going into the final, Jack said.

Ronald Christopher, president of the Lions Club South said he is pleased with the suggestions made by LIME in an effort to see an improvement in the competition.

“It is great that LIME has taken the approach that it has,” Christopher said.

“Lions Club South is extremely grateful to LIME for taking these initiatives,” he continued.

Also part of the sponsorship package, finalists will become members of LIME’s national scholarship foundation and will be the face of the company and participate in the company’s community outreach activities.

The teachers will now receive a stipend, and added to the prizes for the winning school, LIME will work with the school’s administration to identify projects that the company will sponsor for up to one year.

All finalists will also receive $500 towards their tertiary education.

The preliminary stage of the competition begins on October 1 with participating schools divided into four zones, each with its own topics. The finals will be held on October 24. (DD)
