72 children receive scholarships and assistance from RSVGPF

Seventy-two children of present and retired officers of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force were last week presented with full scholarships and assistance based on their performance in this year’s Common Entrance Examinations (CEE).{{more}}

The ceremony, which took place on August 20 at the Old Montrose Police Station, saw 56 students receiving full scholarships, which would last throughout their secondary and tertiary education, and 16 other students given assistance.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Acting Commissioner of Police Michael Charles congratulated all the students for doing well in in the CEE.

He said the transition to new schools marks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

“No more will you be able to sit and relax as you were doing in primary school. It is more challenge; You will meet more friends and have to do more work…”

Charles urged the students to stay focused and noted that the police are just assisting them with the tools to make their tasks at school a bit easier.

He also urged parents and guardians to assist the children in every possible way in their academics.

“Our scholarship is unique. Unique in every sense of the word. You get books throughout, even when you go to Community and Technical College. In these hard economic times, you get a transport allowance. As small as it is, it can still stop a hole,” Charles said.

Sharing brief remarks, Acting Superintendent Ruth Jacobs congratulated outgoing Police Commissioner, Keith Miller for conceptualising the scholarship idea and commended Acting Commissioner Charles for continuing it.

Jacobs, a police officer with over 30 years experience, stressed the importance of education and urged parents to be more involved in their children’s lives.
