Construction to begin on Port Elizabeth Bequia Hospital soon

Construction work on the Port Elizabeth Hospital in Bequia should begin within the next two weeks.{{more}}

A release from the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment said that Ministry is collaborating with the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) on this project.

According to the release, a contract for the works component has already been signed with a local contractor, Kingsley Thomas, and will see the renovation of the entire facility within the next eight months.

“The works form part of a phased approach to the development of health care facilities on that Grenadine Island and is another component of Government’s wider approach to modernizing the Health Sector here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” the release said.

Earlier this year, Phase I of the project was completed, with the opening of the new Port Elizabeth Clinic.

The cost of Phase II of the project is EC$1.2 million.

The Ministry is also collaborating with the BNTF to facilitate the renovation of the Clare Valley Health Clinic, which is expected to begin in the next four to six weeks. Tenders for this project are currently advertised in the local newspapers, and local contractors have been invited to return their bids within the next two weeks.

“The Ministry notes that there will be some inconvenience as a consequence of the construction activities at the named sites, and so temporary arrangements have been made to ensure that critical services are not in any way affected,” the release said.

In Port Elizabeth, the recently retrofitted temporary health clinic will serve to provide most of the services offered by the hospital.

In Clare Valley, a temporary facility has been retrofitted about 200 yards from the existing clinic to house the services provided in that area.

The Ministry asks for the support of the public during this period of disruption to regular health provision.
