The dedication of the flat in the memory of Stephens, who died in 2010, was the final phase of a project undertaken by the staff of the KTI to name the labs/shops and classrooms at the institute.

A release from the KTI said the staff was able to procure the supplies and equipment needed to refurbish and upgrade the flat through many fund-raising projects.

“During the past five months, the staff gave their time, skills, expertise and additional resources to bring this project to fruition,” the release said.

The ceremony, held on May 10, was addressed by principal of the KTI, Chief Education Officer Lou-anne Gilchrist and widower of Stephens, Asfo Stephens.

The Education Officer for Home Economics delivered the citation, while the Deputy Principal of the Bishops College Kingstown Reverend Samuel Nicholls blessed the room.

The plaque was unveiled by Stephens’ son and husband.

“Gretel impacted the lives of the students entrusted to her care as well as her co-workers. She believed in and expected much from her students, as she did for her own children. Many times, the motherly voice, firm and yet encouraging, could be heard admonishing the students,” the citation read.

The theme for the ceremony was: “When you believe, it can happen”.
