Outstanding educator dies

The Ministry of Education and the teaching fraternity are mourning the death of an outstanding educator, Carol Campbell-Brereton.{{more}}

Carol Campbell-Brereton entered the teaching service of St Vincent and the Grenadines on January 1, 1947, as a pupil teacher, then moved up to the rank of student teacher on January 1, 1951.

In January 1953, she was elevated to the position of assistant teacher at the Tourama Government School, after passing the Teachers’ College Examination in 1952.

In 1963, she successfully completed studies at the Erdiston Teachers’ College in Barbados and was duly rewarded for her achievement with a promotion to qualified assistant teacher (QAT) in 1965, and one year later she was appointed headteacher of the Tourama Government School.

Brereton’s interest in Infant Education resulted in her successfully pursuing studies in Infant and Junior Education in the United Kingdom from 1968 to 1969. On the completion of her studies, she returned to the helm of the Tourama Government School, armed with her newly acquired skill.

It was no surprise then that in 1971, she had a short stint as organizer of Infant Education in the Ministry of Education.

After her tenure as an organizer, she had further stints as headteacher at the Georgetown Government School (1971-1974) and the Kingstown Preparatory School, where she spent her final years and had her longest tenure (1974 – 1980).

On September 1, 1980, owing to her strength in the field of Infant Education, she was tasked with the responsibility of being organizer of Infant Education in the Ministry of Education and Youth Affairs.

After 36 rewarding years of service she retired from the teaching service in 1983.

A release from the Ministry of Education said “During her long career as an educator, Mrs Brereton touched the lives of many students who have impacted positively on the Vincentian community and for this the Ministry of Education is grateful.

“The Ministry of Education extends sincere and profound condolences to her immediate family, relatives and friends.

“May almighty God grant her eternal peace and rest.”
