Digicel’s new country manager is looking to up game

Digicel’s newest country manager Sean Latty has brought to these shores 13 years of experience in the telecommunications industry and a diverse perspective garnered from his years of working in different Caribbean countries.{{more}}

Latty is Jamaican by birth and considers himself a true Caribbean man, having not only lived and worked in his homeland, but in other countries including Aruba, Cayman Islands and St Kitts and Nevis.

Earlier this week, sitting at his new desk at Digicel’s Head Office, located in the Lewis Building on James Street, Latty said that he is happy to bring his years of experience to St Vincent and the Grenadines, after working in St Kitts and Nevis, where he was stationed for four years, five months.

“Looking at the St Vincent and the Grenadines market, it is very good business. We have a very strong product in terms of network, in terms of customer service, in terms of products, so I’m just looking to bring to the market here my experience and up the game a little more”, said Latty.

Latty has been with Digicel since the company opened its doors in the Caribbean. He was employed with Air Jamaica before moving to join Digicel Jamaica in 2001. After spending a year at Digicel Jamaica, Latty went over to Digicel Aruba and joined the team there as Customer Care Roll Out manager.

After spending just a year in Aruba, he went back to Digicel Jamaica as Customer Care technical manager in 2004, holding responsibility for call centre special projects along with the procurement, development and implementation of all the call centre systems.

In 2005, Latty was appointed operations manager for the Cayman Islands and then operations director for Northern Caribbean islands (consists of Bermuda, Turks and Caicos and Grand Cayman).

After a stint as acting general manager for Grand Cayman, Latty was appointed general manager for St Kitts and Nevis in December 2008 and now he has taken over the reins here from Sonia Polius.

Always with a ready smile, Latty describes himself as a country boy, having come from rural St Catherine/Clarendon. He went to school in Kingston and joined Air Jamaica straight out of school.

“My first job was at Air Jamaica, and I worked there six years and it was one of the most amazing experiences. Working in the airline industry teaches you certain basic principles; what it does for you, it teaches you time management and the importance of being punctual and being courteous to customers”, stressed Latty who has brought what he learnt working in the airline industry to Digicel.

He said that he joined Digicel when it was known as Mossel Ltd, “and when I applied, nobody knew much about the company that has now positively impacted the lives of so many Caribbean people”.

Digicel (Mossel Jamaica Limited) won a 15-year license in February 2000 for a nation-wide digital GSM cellular network in Jamaica.

On St Vincent and the Grenadines, Latty says “the team that I have inherited has done a wonderful job for the last 10 years, so I am looking to bring my 13 years’ experience to augment the product that we have and make it even bigger and better and even more extraordinary”.

Latty adds “travelling has made me more of a Caribbean man, because moving around has helped me to integrate and appreciate the beauty and talent in the various islands…Digicel is a very nimble company; we are not caught up on paralysis by analysis and over thinking things; we look at what the consumer wants and we focus on delivering that”.

He added that the first thing Digicel did when they began operating in the Caribbean “was give consumers a quality network and we are trying to do even better.

“I find the Vincentians warm and friendly and I am looking forward to my time here”, said Latty, smiling as usual.

Latty takes over from St Lucian Sonia Polius who joined Digicel SVG on May 21st, 2007. Polius, like Latty, worked in the airline industry before joining the Digicel family.
