Lionfish derby returns to Mayreau Regatta

The venomous marine predator, the lionfish, is expected to, once more, be the main item on the menu, at the Mayreau Regatta, which takes place next month.{{more}}

The lionfish derby is just one of the highly anticipated events, set to take place during the May 2 to 5 regatta, which will also see sailors from the Grenadines and neighbouring islands competing for lucrative prizes and prestige among their colleagues.

The derby will be part of the fishing competition, which takes place on the opening day of the regatta, with the official opening ceremony scheduled to take place later that evening at the Mayreau Hard Court.

During this ceremony, a moment of silence would be observed for Elmore “I Live” Lewis, a member of the organizing committee, who died in February.

The following day, the rivalry between the basketball teams on Mayreau and Union Island will be rekindled, as the two face off in their annual tournament at the hard court.

This will be followed by the cultural and talent night, and an all-white themed after-party featuring Luta and Fireman Hooper of the LIME Soca Dans.

The Dans will be out in full force on Saturday, during the first day of sailboat racing, involving class A-F and gum-boats.

Sailboat racing continues on Sunday in various classes, with festivities coming to an end later that day, with the closing ceremony.

Miss Easterval 2013, Mayreau’s very own Justlyn Ollivierre, will make special appearances during the regatta.

The Mayreau regatta has been taking place for the past seven years, and brings the curtains down on regatta activities in the Grenadines.
