Kingstown Anglican leading in AIR Schools’ Recycling Competition

The Kingstown Anglican School has moved to the head of the pack at the end of the second week of All Islands Recycling Inc.’s (AIR) Schools’ Recycling Competition.{{more}}

They are followed by Windsor Primary and Thomas Saunders Secondary.

The schools are vying for extra dollars for their school, while at the same time lessening the amount of plastics headed for landfills, rivers and seas.

Some 16,000 bottles have been collected since the programme was launched on November 19.

AIR said in a release that it is pleased that a significant contribution has been made in lessening the number of plastics and aluminium cans, which may have otherwise been headed to the local landfill and the country’s coastline.

During this, the pilot phase of the programme, students are being encouraged to recycle plastic bottles and aluminium cans, by placing them in the receptacles that AIR has placed at all the participating schools.

The three schools making top dollars in doing so will also receive additional sums of $1,500, $1,000 and $500. These additional funds are expected to go towards a school project determined by the institution.

The programme is being spearheaded by AIR Inc.

The Ministry of Education and Digicel are collaborating with AIR in this initiative.

It will run until December 11, following which an assessment will be made as to how to take the programme forward.
