MOE gets educational boost from OAS

The Organization of American States (OAS) yesterday handed over educational materials and equipment to the Ministry of Education at the Curriculum Development Unit.{{more}}

The OAS, through its Department of Sustainable Development (DSD), has been working with the Government to support its initiatives in the area of sustainable energy.

Through the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Programme (CSEP), which aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy, a new initiative has been developed for its participating countries — Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Merlene Glynn, the OAS representative in SVG, said the new Caribbean Energy Education and Awareness Program (CEEAP) aims to reinforce and improve the institutional and pedagogic capacities of teachers and staff of the Ministry of Education.

The programme also seeks to improve the science curriculum in both primary and secondary education on the topic of energy conservation and its efficient use, as well as the use of renewable energy sources.

To commemorate this endeavour, Glynn presented tool kits and other learning material pertaining to efficient energy sources to the Education Officer of Science, Amalia Mohammed, who said, “… in order to develop a scientifically literate society, we must start with our young people”.

She stated that the resources would aid in the teaching of science, in topics and projects that pertain to energy.

The learning materials and equipment are expected to undergo pilot use in one or two classes before they can be implemented in all schools here.
