Police to enforce law mandating receptacles for omnibuses, taxis

The Traffic Department of the Royal St.Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force is calling on all minibus and taxi operators throughout the state to have receptacles placed in their vehicles.{{more}}

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kenneth John, Head of the RSVGPF Traffic Department, on Wednesday said shortly the police will be conducting checks to ensure that minibus and taxi operators comply with the law.

“According to the Litter Act, the owner of every bus and taxi while his or her vehicle is plying for hire, provide in a convenient place therein adequate receptacles for the deposit of litter,” said John.

He disclosed that an operator who commits the offence of failure to provide a receptacle is liable to a fine of EC$2,000.

John explained that the Traffic Department is using the opportunity during a short grace period to sensitize stakeholders in the public transport industry about the Litter Act after observing passengers disposing of garbage through the windows of vehicles.

“These items can injure people,” said John, as he reiterated that it is illegal to litter.

John is also encouraging truckers, especially operators of cement and garbage trucks, to secure substances and materials, which are likely to fall off or blow off the motor vehicle.

The Litter Act was enacted on July 23, 1991.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Traffic Department is appealing to drivers to desist from using ‘Keep Clear’ signs for parking. John said these signs are designated for loading and off loading of vehicles.

“These signs are not for parking while shopping or engaging in other activities,” John explained.
