SVG records 67 per cent pass rate in CSEC Examinations

St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has recorded a 67 per cent pass rate in the May/June 2012 Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (CSEC).{{more}}

A release from the Ministry of Education said the preliminary results, which were received on August 13, show that this year, 7.38 per cent of the passes were at Grade I level, 25.06 per cent at Grade II and 35.56 per cent at Grade III.

Last year’s figures were 8.98 per cent, 23.84 per cent and 35.07 per cent respectively.

This year’s overall pass rate was the same as last year’s. The corresponding figure in 2010 was 69 per cent.

The performance of candidates from SVG surpasses the regional pass rate, which showed a decline this year. A release from the Caribbean Examinations Council said this year, only 62 per cent of the candidate entries in the region achieved Grades I – III, the acceptable grades; this compared with 66 per cent in 2011 and 69 per cent in 2010.

Of the 62 per cent achieving acceptable grades, 11.30 gained Grade I, 22.39 gained Grade II and 28.46 per cent gained Grade III.

In SVG, 3,012 candidates were registered for the exam in 2012. Of these, 1,354 were private candidates and 1,658 were school candidates. This compares with 2,990 candidates in 2011, with 1,391 being private candidates and 1,599 being school candidates.

There were 11,392 subject entries in 33 subject areas, from 26 secondary schools.

The Ministry’s release said three schools recorded percentage pass rates in excess of 80 per cent. These schools are: Girls’ High School (96.70 per cent), the St Joseph’s Convent, Kingstown (89.09 per cent) and the St Vincent Grammar School (87.38 per cent)

Three schools obtained creditable pass rates between 70 per cent and 80 per cent. These were Thomas Saunders Secondary School (77.27 per cent), Troumaca Secondary School (73.71 per cent) and Central Leeward Secondary School (71.86 per cent). The school which recorded the most significant improvement is the West St George Secondary, whose pass rate increased from 41 per cent in 2011 to 64 per cent in 2012.

This year’s outstanding results include a student with twelve passes, 11 Grade I and 1 Grade II. One student gained 13 passes, three students obtained twelve passes and twenty-five gained eleven passes. These students are from the Mountain View Adventist Academy, Girls’ High School and the St Vincent Grammar School.
