SVGBS to implement conformity assessment on toilet tissue

As of September 1, 2012, the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Bureau of Standards (SVGBS), in collaboration with other regulatory agencies will be implementing conformity assessment of toilet tissue traded in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).{{more}}

According to a release from the SVGBS, this conformity assessment will be conducted in accordance with the National Standards on the Labelling of Prepackaged Goods and Specification for Toilet Tissue in Rolls: Single and Two-Ply. These standards are harmonized CARICOM Standards, which specify the compliance criteria for goods which are to be traded in SVG. The standards, are being enforced, so as to prevent fraud or deception arising from misleading advertising or labelling and to provide adequate information to the purchaser or consumer, as well as to promote healthy competition among like-products.

Accordingly, as of September 1, all toilet tissue offered for trade in SVG must meet the requirements of the aforementioned National Standards. Among the requirements to be verified are product labels, tissue core size, the number of sheets per roll and the physical dimensions of each sheet.

According to the Standards Act, No 70 of 1992, the SVGBS is the only national standards body that has the authority, inter alia, “…. to prepare and promote standards relating to goods, services, processes and practices and as such the SVGBS remains committed to the creation and maintenance of a National Quality Infrastructure built on the pillars of Standards, Quality Assurance and Metrology and by virtue to use these pillars to build confidence and quality competitiveness.”
