More Taiwan Scholarships for Vincentian youths
Six more young Vincentians will be granted Taiwan Scholarships in 2012 to fulfill their dream of pursuing a bachelorâs or masterâs degree in Taiwan.{{more}}
The six recipients of this yearâs scholarships are KâSha Woodley, Dacia Tucker, Juliana Francis, Allison Thomas, Gordon Charles and Jarand Baker.
Woodley, Tucker and Francis will pursue masterâs degrees in environmental studies, business administration and electro-mechanical engineering respectively; whereas Thomas and Charles will study for undergraduate degrees in management and mechanical engineering.
Baker will study Mandarin Chinese for a year.
The Embassy will hold the presentation of the scholarships at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Camp for Taiwan Youth Ambassadors and a student group of the SVG Community College next Friday.
The SVG Taiwan Alumni Association was formed in 2011 by those who have returned, and Gordon Shallow is currently the president of the Association. As usual, the Embassy will invite members of the Alumni Association to share with the new recipients the experience of studying in Taiwan, before they depart.
The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) has been providing Taiwan Scholarships to Vincentian youth to study in Taiwan annually since 2004. The scholarship is aimed not only at developing outstanding professionals and experts to meet the needs of St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), but also to promote knowledge, understanding and friendship between the people of Taiwan and the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
To date, over 50 Vincentians have received such scholarships and some of them have graduated and returned home. Of those who returned, some work for the government and are in charge of important bilateral cooperative projects between SVG and Taiwan. Currently, more than 40 recipients are still studying at various universities in Taiwan. The SVG government has been attaching great importance to the Vincentian students in Taiwan. Meeting with students has always been one of the prioritized programmes for Dr the Hon. Ralph E. Gonsalves, Prime Minister of SVG, during his visits to Taiwan in recent years.
