SJCK Young Leaders 2012 officially launched

The St.Joseph’s Convent Kingstown Young Leaders group was officially launched last week Friday, February 10, 2012, at the school’s auditorium.{{more}}

The theme for this year’s RBC/RBTT programme is “Climate Change. Global Phenomenon. Community Solutions”. The group has adopted as its theme “Uniting communities to combat the effects of climate change. One carbon atom at a time.”

The session was chaired by the president Crystal Webb and vice president Michele De Freitas. Both used the opportunity to give a speech to the school on climate change and the devastating effects of climate change on the region as well as the planet on a whole.

The group also outlined to the school’s population the importance of recycling and preserving our forested areas. To this end, the group will be placing recycling bins on the school’s compound to recycle many plastic bottles.

At the launch, the group also launched its website: www.SJCKyoungleaders2012.webs.com. They can also be found on Facebook and Twitter at SJCK Young Leaders. It is the wish of the group that everyone should become involved in activities that focus on climate change. The group has a list of such activities, and they are hoping that the general public takes part since climate change will in some way affect all of us.

Climate Change has significant implications for lives and livelihoods in small island developing states like SVG. Hence the group believes that our country needs not only to adopt appropriate responsive strategies but also to go further by integrating climate issues into developmental process. The strategies towards responding to climate change can be mitigation or adaptation. For SVG, our response should focus more on adaptation rather than mitigation.

The overall goal of the group is to save the earth for future generations. To do this, we must protect the environment and educate the youth as well the older ones on solutions that once adopted can reduce the effects of climate change.
