River to receive CXC award at ceremony in Trinidad
Vincentian student River Providence will be among 14 students from around the region who will on December 1 be awarded by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) for outstanding performances in the May / June 2011 CAPE and CSEC examinations.{{more}}
The Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, will be the venue for the 2011 Caribbean Examinations Councilâs annual governance meetings and the awards ceremony.
Seventeen-year-old River, a former student of the Girlsâ High School, is the recipient of the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in the Humanities for 2011.
River, the daughter of Dr. Karen Providence of Green Hill, achieved Grade I in 11 subjects, with all A Profiles, except one B Profile in Information Technology. River achieved Grade I in Biology, Caribbean History, Chemistry, English A, English B, French, Geography, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics and Social Studies.
The meeting of the School Examinations Committee (SEC) will be held on Thursday, December 1, and the meeting of Council, CXCâs highest decision-making body, will be held on Friday, December 2.
The presentation ceremony for the 14 students who have won Regional Top Awards and the Official Opening of the 43rd Meeting of Council will be held at 6:00 pm on Thursday, December 1.
Dr the Honourable Tim Gopeesingh, Minister of Education in Trinidad and Tobago, will deliver the keynote address at the ceremony.
Professor E Nigel Harris, Chairman of CXC; Dr Didacus Jules, Registrar of CXC, and Miss Anuradha Dev of Queenâs College, Guyana, the Most Outstanding Candidate Overall in CSEC will also address the ceremony.
While in Trinidad and Tobago, the Regional Top Awardees and a CXC delegation will pay courtesy calls on several government officials on Wednesday, November 30.
Following the courtesy calls, the awardees will get a taste of Trinidad and Tobagoâs culture as they visit both a mas camp and a pan yard, as well as attend a Diwali presentation, on Wednesday afternoon. The awardees and a CXC delegation will also visit Tobago on Tuesday, November 29, and will be guests of the Tobago House of Assembly for the day. While on Tobago, they will pay a courtesy call on the Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly and visit a secondary school to interact with students from the island and tour places of interest.
Trinidad and Tobago last hosted the Council meeting in 2003.
The Council comprises representatives of 16 Participating Countries, The University of the West Indies, University of Guyana and the Teaching profession. The Council deals with finance and administrative issues, while the SEC deals with technical and examination issues.
