D’andre wins Leo Club Literacy Competition
Dâandre Toney has excelled once again, this time taking the top spot in the 13th Leo Club St. Vincent Annual National Primary Schools Literacy competition.{{more}}
The Finals of the competition took place on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at the Frenches House in Kingstown.
Eight finalists tackled two rounds of reading. One, a previously prepared composition, and the other a spontaneous composition. Students were also asked two questions based on the spontaneous composition to test their comprehension skills.
Toney, a pupil of the Georgetown Government School, took away an Amazon Kindle, a trophy and US$75 dollars for his win. Only two weeks ago, he won the Haliborange Seven Seas Rotaract Primary Schoolsâ Spelling Bee competition.
Emilie Richards, student of the Mustique Primary School, was awarded second place and received an Amazon Kindle and US$50. Settling for third place was Brianna Richards from the Paget Farm Primary School in Bequia, who also received an Amazon Kindle and US$25.
Kingstown Preparatory School student Kelcey Allen won in the Best Written essay category, while Toney received an award for Best Answered questions and the Best Read piece in the spontaneous segment. Richards was awarded the winner in the best Read Written composition.
Chief Judge in the competition, Kay Martin Jack, commended the students on their excellent reading and comprehension skills, especially in the spontaneous segment, in which the students were not acquainted with the composition.
Students making up the general audience also took part in the reading fun, as they participated in a short reading competition, spelling competition and a general quiz. One student even sang to pass the time as the judges deliberated.
Other schools which took part in the competition were the Barrouallie Anglican School, the Lodge Village Government School, the Paradise Primary School and the Stubbs Government School.
