Mustique Charitable Trust donates to Owia

On October 12, 2011, the Mustique Charitable Trust (MCT) handed over furniture to the Owia Government School for use in the Information Technology (IT) Laboratory at the school.{{more}} The grant consists of 7 Computer Desks, 8 Folding Chairs, 2 Surge Protectors and a Table, all costing $4,557.50. This grant will benefit the school population of 138 students as all use the IT Laboratory.

Representing the Board of Trustees of the Mustique Charitable Trust at the event was Lavinia Gunn, the Administrator of the Trust. Jacqueline Glasgow Browne, Senior Education Offcier with responsibility for primary schools in the Ministry of Education, was also present at the ceremony, which was attended by the students and staff.

On July 15, 2011, The Mustique Charitable Trust (MCT) received a letter from the Owia Government School requesting assistance with the purchasing of furniture for the IT Lab. The school had received computers from the Ministry of Education, but had no furniture for the IT Laboratory. The Trustees, at their Board Meeting on August 24, 2011, approved this request for funding through its Education Grant Programme. The Trustees endorsed the initiative being taken by the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to enhance ITC education. With a mission statement dedicated to “providing support to enhance educational opportunities for children and young people in St Vincent and the Grenadines while building sustainable communities throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines” the Trust is committed to provide support to education. The Owia Government School has also benefitted from the Mustique Charitable Trust (MCT) through the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Programme as the Trust provided a Grant of EC $15, 900.00 for the purchase of D.A.R.E. work books, stationery, a TV and a DVD player, as well as t-shirts for the participants in 2010-2011. The Owia Government School is one of the many primary schools that benefitted from this grant. The programme is delivered by the D.A.R.E Unit in the Royal Police Force of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Trust attended the Graduation Ceremony in June, when all the students attending the sessions were awarded with certificates. Through the MCT Hurricane Tomas Relief Fund, seven homes were repaired in the Owia area at a cost of $20, 722.66 from donations from Mustique Homeowners to this specially created Relief Fund. Building materials were supplied, with the recipients providing their own labour, enabling the Trust to give assistance to as many families as possible in the Owia area.
