Baptiste tells young men to stop the ‘Sagging’

Young men throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines who continue to sport their pants below their waists have been encouraged to stop being followers and become leaders of their own domain.{{more}}

The advice was issued by Director for the Vincentian Association of Artists, Writers and Producers Inc. Rene Baptiste, during the company’s launch on Saturday, September 24.

“We need to see ourselves not to be cloned or clones of another ….

It hurts my soul when I see young men with their pants at their knees,” the Director said.

The former Culture Minister said that the style of those who wear their pants in that manner are the actions of “jail house culture.”

“That is not part of our culture. You see how fast jail is filling up?

Every week all the newspapers in St. Vincent sell with the same front page story,” she added.

In an effort to bring across her point about the difference between followers and leaders, Baptiste used her experience of visiting Nigeria as an electoral observer.

She explained that as an observer, she travelled to different parts of the African country.

Pounding her hand on the podium and using a commanding voice, Baptiste said “I have never seen a single Nigerian with his pant on his knees!”

According to the Wikipedia, the wearing of one’s trousers (slacks, shorts, pants or jeans) below the waist, hanging below the waist area and therefore revealing much of the underwear, is known as ‘Sagging’.

It further states that Sagging is predominantly a male fashion.

An individual that participates in the practice of sagging may be referred to as a ‘Sagger’.

However, in some parts of the United States, this culture has been banned. In June 2007, the Town Council of Delcambre, Louisiana, passed an indecent exposure ordinance, which prohibited intentionally wearing one’s pants in such a way as to show underwear.(AA)
