First General Manager of Radio St. Vincent passes

The first General Manager of Radio St. Vincent and the Grenadines is dead.{{more}}

Claude Theobalds died at his home at Cane Garden on Tuesday, August 30.

He was 84 years old.

He served as General Manager of Radio St. Vincent from its establishment in 1972 to 1982, when he retired.

Former General Manager of Radio St. Vincent and the Grenadines Jean Duncan, in an interview with the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) Radio, said she remembers Theobalds as a leader who always sought to motivate the staff.

“I found him to be someone who was very interested in our vision. Someone who was ready to discuss and accept suggestions which he saw as needed,” Duncan said.

Duncan, who served as Programme Manager when Theobalds was General Manager, said he was well respected by staff members and was always involved in many of the staff activities.

Nina Maloney, who also served as General Manager of NBC Radio, which was established in 1986, remembers Theobalds as a strong leader who was well respected locally and regionally.

“He was a great leader. One person who in trying to help knew how to pause for a small moment to listen and to understand,” Maloney said.

Theobalds, a Vincentian national, was St. Lucian by birth.

He is survived by his children Anthony Theobalds, Director of Culture; Charmaine Theobalds-Francis and Ricardo Theobalds.

His wife Yolande Theobalds, who was also St. Lucian by birth, pre-deceased him.
