Summer programme launched in Canouan
The children of Canouan are in for a treat over the next five weeks, with the launch of a summer programme where they will learn to play musical instruments and pick up a new sporting activity.{{more}}
The âPan Against Crimeâ initiative has teamed up with the long-running Canouan Save Our Children summer programme, with funding from the Caribbean Construction Association (CCA)/ Canouan Resort Development Holdings (CRD).
At the launch, which took place in Canouan on Saturday, July 23, Commissioner of Police Keith Miller encouraged parents to get their children involved in worthwhile activities to prevent them from getting involved in anti-social or criminal activity.
âThe Pan Against Crime initiative is one of those strategies which we are using to ensure that we have children on the correct path,â he affirmed.
âSports, culture and education⦠they mesh together!â
The programme is expecting attendance of 65 children, and they will be coached in playing the steel pan, the recorder, cricket and tennis.
Colette Myers, an administrative assistant with the CCA, will teach the steel pan; PC Ordell Charles – the recorder; Andy Bentick, tennis instructor at the Canouan Resort – tennis; and cricket will be taught by a team from the Canouan Cricket Club, headed by its president Earl Grant.
The Canouan Save Our Children summer programme has been running for 10 years, and this year was extended to incorporate the Royal SVG Police Forceâs âPan Against Crimeâ programme.
Helen Child, public relations coordinator at the CCA, urged parents and community members to support the summer programme.
âThe CCA and CRD⦠are very enthusiastic in offering assistance to this programme, to provide a medium through which the youth of Canouan can channel their energies in a meaningful way; with a focus to improving their lives,â said Child.
Commissioner Miller also commended Elena Korach, CCA General Manager, and Jocelyn Shepphard, President of the Canouan Save Our Children summer programme, for their dedication and input into this initiative.(JV)
