Art ‘N’ Action hosts Exhibition at New Library

The Art “N” Action art exhibition officially got underway last Monday, June 20, at the new public library building in Kingstown.{{more}}

The exhibition features pieces from some of this country’s foremost artists and photographers, including Dinks Johnson, Jecintha Knights-Hope, Conroy Dyer, Robert Joyette, and veteran Mas men such as Owen Ralph and Julian ‘Pilling’ Pollard.

Kingsley Roberts, member of the Art N’ Action committee, said that the idea to have an exhibition that coincides with the carnival festivities started about two years ago.

Since then it has been the desired goal of the group of artists to have a permanent home to display their creative work. More so, carnival attracts visitors from different corners of the globe, Roberts contended, and for many, they would wish to take something back that was created in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Currently, such a facility does not exist, but he said that he was hoping that others would come on board after seeing the staging of the exhibition this year.

Conroy Dyer, local artist, was of the opinion that the staging of the exhibition was for a common cause.

“We feel that there is something happening in the visual arts,” Dyer said, adding that although it has been a rough road in getting to execute the exhibition, there was a lot happening in terms of Vincentian art.

“What you see here is an effort and is the ground work for what is to come,” he continued.

The hard work of the local artists is beginning to bear fruit. However, this with the news coming from Anthony Theobalds, Cultural Officer in the Ministry of Culture, that the Carnival Development Corporation has made a decision to include the exhibition in their calendar of events beginning next year. He said that it was a bit too late to get it in for this year’s edition, but assured those involved that the Ministry was in full support of the effort of the artists.

“The collection of artwork includes photography and a collage of various media and painting – it speaks well of the talent of our Vincentian artists,” Theobalds said.

The exhibition is open to the public and runs until July 9. (DD)
