Youlou Arts Foundation announces Summer Arts Programme

The Youlou Arts Foundation has announced its 2011 Summer Arts Programme, including an island-wide Children’s Art Fair, a Teacher Training Workshop, and a “Growing Young St. Vincent Artists” Visual Arts Program.{{more}}

The 3rd Annual St. Vincent Children’s Art Fair will be held on Saturday, July 16, from 3 – 6 p.m. at the Girl Guides Headquarters at Kingstown Park. Planned activities include jewelry and pottery making, volcanic rock, craft and face painting, and an array of games and activities, including the popular Hula Hoop contest. New this year is a paper station where children can make greeting cards, book marks, accordion books and art cards.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the establishment of an Art Centre and Gallery in St. Vincent.

Established in 1999 by St. Vincent artist Camille Saunders-Musser, the Youlou Arts Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization created for the sole purpose of developing, promoting and preserving the arts and culture of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The organization is committed to offering art education to the children of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, by promoting excellence in the visual, performing and literary arts.

The Teacher Training Workshop will be held at the Thomas Saunders Secondary School, July 11 – 15. The Visual Arts Program is for children ages 5 – 15 and will be held concurrently in multiple communities, including Kingstown, Spring Village, Barrouallie and Georgetown, from July 18 – August 5.

The theme for this year’s Visual Arts Program is “My Homeland, Part 2: A Historical Perspective.” Students will visit historical sites and monuments in St. Vincent, and will be asked to focus on the way people lived in St. Vincent before the arrival of Columbus in the region.
