Bequia Anglican School takes the title again

The Bequia Anglican School does it again! The School, for the second consecutive year, was crowned winner of the Ministry of Tourism and Industry and Courts St. Vincent Ltd.{{more}} Primary Schools Choral Speaking Competition.

The Bequia Anglican School competed against 12 other local schools during the finals of the competition on Tuesday, May 31, at the Peace Memorial Hall. The theme of the competition was: “Our Children Talk Tourism: Proud, Patriotic and Playing Our Part.”

The Bequia Anglican School, who presented on the various aspects of Vincentian heritage, culture and natural beauty which makes them proud to be Vincy, also copped the Best Dressed award and the Best Performance and Presentation award. The school also walked away with a first prize trophy as well as a Dell desktop computer and an all-in-one printer, compliments Courts, platinum sponsors of the competition.

The St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School took second place in the competition with their presentation which emphasized the importance of team work in promoting tourism in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. They walked away with a Trophy, as well as a desktop computer and printer.

Third place went to the Lodge Village Government School who also won Best Choral Speech award. Their prizes included a desktop computer and a 16 GB flash drive, as well as a trophy. The fourth position went to Calliaqua Anglican School, who received a digital camera, compliments Courts, while the Layou Anglican School settled for fifth place and was also awarded the Best Interpretation of the Theme award. The school received a small stereo set also from Courts.

Minister of Tourism and Industry Saboto Caesar stated that in order for there to be sustainable growth and development in the tourism sector, it is important that awareness is created. He added that in the creation of awareness, education is of paramount importance. Caesar stated that primary and secondary schools have been targeted, and the importance of tourism has been impressed upon them.

Director of Tourism Vida Bernard stated that the Ministry of Tourism has embarked on a National Tourism Awareness programme and that everyone, including schoolchildren, must play a part in the programme.

Making remarks on behalf of the judges, at the end of the competition, Jacintha James stated the many positives of the schools’ presentations, which included good interpretation of the theme, good body language and facial expression, excellent solo parts. Several areas such as enunciation, the pace and tone of the presentations, the proper use of props needed improvement in some presentations.

The other finalists in the competition were the Barrouallie Anglican School, the Belmont Government School, Bequia S.D.A. School, Brighton Methodist School, Cane End Government School, C.W. Prescod School, Gomea Government School and Sandy Bay Government School.
