King and Browne launch books at UWI Open Campus

The KING-SVG Publishers celebrated the publication of two of its latest books, edited and written by Vincentians.{{more}}

The books “Caribbean Trailblazers: SVG” and “Spirit-Filled and Emancipated Living” were officially launched on Tuesday, February 22, at the University of the West Indies Open Campus.The books were published last year in July and December respectively.

Co-editor of the “Caribbean Trailblazers: SVG” Dr. Baldwin King, making remarks at the launch, stated that the book highlights 15 individuals who have contributed significantly to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

King stated that two of the 15 persons featured in the book are alive, while only three out of the 15 featured are women. Two of the individuals are also Grenadians who, King said, have made contributions to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Some of the persons featured include National Hero Joseph Chatoyer, Dr. J.P. Eustace, author of the National Anthem Phyllis Punnett and Earl ‘Ole George’ Daniel. The book was edited by Cheryl King.

King also said that he plans to continue the series; however, its continuation will depend on the availability of writers. Each individual profile in the book was written by a Vincentian. Condolences were also expressed to Sir Fred Phillips’ friends and family. Phillips was a contributing writer to the novel and had received a copy of the book before his passing. King stated that they are in the process of working on a second book. He made an appeal to writers who wish to write a profile on an outstanding Vincentian to do so and to contact the publishers.

Aspects of “Emancipation of self”, “Fruits of the spirit” and “Taming of the tongue” were discussed in Laura Anthony-Browne’s book “Spirit-Filled and Emancipated Living.” The book is a compilation of scripts from a radio programme series: “How great a flame”, which she hosted last year in January, August and October.

Anthony-Browne explained that each section deals with a different issue, addressing how Christians can overcome several everyday challenges. The first section deals with applying the “Fruits of the Spirit” mentioned in Galatians 5:22 of the Bible. Anthony-Browne highlighted that love is a solution to many of the issues presented in everyday life, as true love will prevent persons from harming or hurting others.

“Emancipation and Freedom” was discussed in the second part of the book. Anthony-Browne stated that during that time was the celebration of the 172nd anniversary of emancipation from slavery. She discussed issues such as what keeps Christians in bondage, identifying factors such as fear, pride and unforgiveness. In the final section of the book, Anthony Browne discusses the “taming of the tongue”, including the power of the tongue among other things.

Guests at the launch also had an opportunity to offer their commendations and questions to the authors. The event also included a book signing by the Dr. Baldwin King, Cheryl King and Laura Anthony-Browne.(OS)
