PM tells graduates ‘choose universities wisely, seek advice’

Students hoping to embark on university studies are being urged to choose carefully and seek advice.{{more}}

This was the message given by Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves as he shared brief remarks at the recently held St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College amalgamated graduation at the Victoria Park on Tuesday, June 22, 2010.

“When you are going to university, choose very carefully…there are some people who want to go to the most expensive schools, but you have to be mindful that your education is an investment,” Gonsalves warned.

Speaking to the 637 graduates on hand, Gonsalves made mention of students who look to pursue studies outside the region.

“Going outside the Caribbean to pursue studies, unless scholarships are secured, the costs are significantly more,” said Gonsalves.

The finance minister told the graduates that there are many opportunities for university education overseas, once students perform well.

“There are far more scholarships and bursaries than ever before, but the numbers will depend on the quality of the grades,” stated Gonsalves.

Gonsalves further beseeched the students to consider choosing subject areas that they love and would grant them an opportunity for useful employment upon completion of their studies.

“You have to take a lot of advice when you are going to a particular university…don’t do it on your own. Seek the advice of your counsellors at the College and from the Ministry of Education,” Gonsalves advised.
