School for Special Needs marks 35 years

Doris John may have smiled the brightest on Monday, May 7, 2010.

This was after she was awarded for her years of service at the School for Children with Special Needs as part of the 35th anniversary celebrations of the school.{{more}}

Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT after a short ceremony at the school, John, who has worked at the institution for twenty-seven years, said that she served as an attendant, lunch lady and assistant, and anywhere there was a need. She added that she felt “happy and overwhelmed” about receiving the award.

Delivering the award, Principal Naseem Smith-Williams thanked John for her years of work at the school, noting that she is best known for her smile, which adorned her face throughout Williams’ presentation.

The short ceremony also featured a slide show of the school’s activities, including The Olympics, sports and photos of past students and teachers of the institution.

The School for Children with Special Needs will continue their anniversary celebrations with activities scheduled throughout the year. Activities include a physical education workshop for teachers and parents and the first ever Spelling Bee and Read-a-thon for the children.
