Lions stage Exhibition

The Lions Den in Kingstown was earlier this week transformed into an artists haven, as several of St. Vincent’s artists showcased their work at the 2nd Annual Arts and Crafts Exhibition.{{more}}

Sixteen local artists and craftsmen set up stations with various creations including jewelry, crochet, greeting cards, plaques, books and chairs.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Wednesday, April 28, President of the Lions Club Kingstown, Dr Alson Jack, commended the artists on their participation. He added that he would like to see the exhibition developed, not so much in terms of the number of participants, but in the quality of the products presented. He noted that this year’s quality has improved from last year.

Jack added that arts and crafts can be taken to a higher level where artists can feature their products via the World Wide Web, making it easier for persons abroad to view and purchase items.

Also speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Culture Rene Baptisté referred to the artists showcase as “encouraging”. Referring to arts and crafts as a reflection on the soul and spirit of the people, Baptiste added that as a small country, we should make use of our skills and talents and opportunities available to us.

Recognizing a few of the artists present, Baptiste commended Dr. Edgar Adams on his display of books by Vincentian authors, stating that books are a part of the art of a nation as they display the culture of a nation through written work.

Other participants in the exhibition include Tubb’s Arts and Craft, Exquisite Crochet, Kathleen Huggins, and The Society of and for the Blind who displayed mops and chairs.

The event was coordinated by Lion Roxanne De Freitas and will end today.(OS)
