Behaviour Management Retreat at Buccament Bay Secondary

The first and second formers of the Buccament Bay Secondary School participated in a “Behaviour Management Retreat” on Tuesday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 20, 2010, under the team “Together we can”.{{more}}

The retreat was organized especially for the 1st and 2nd formers by the school’s Guidance Counsellor, Heather Stewart, and the Peace Corps volunteer, Kelly Wagner. The 1st formers had their retreat on Tuesday, April 20.

The 63 students who participated gained useful skills in the areas of Team work, Conflict resolution, Study skills/study tips, abstinence and sex related issues. Two Science students from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines A’ level College, Kadya Stewart and Kareem Thompson, placed special emphasis on the need for students to abstain from sexual activities while they are in school and while they pursue their career goals.

The interactive session on stigma assisted in bringing out students’ creative talents in drama and play. The students’ dramatic performances highlighted the consequences of becoming sexually involved too early in their lives.

Participants also received warmth, congruency and positive regards from stalwart helpers in the persons of Kathleen Jeffers, Jasmine Francois/Creese, Peace Corps Director Cuthbert James, and Bertillion Hamilton. Hamilton worked with the schools’ peer counsellors during the first term in the area of leadership, where he focused on the importance of practicing team work. He pledged his support in further working with fifteen students who will receive training as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Programme.

The Football Association assisted tremendously. Earl Bennett and FIFA representative Bert Francois acted as key-note speakers and made sterling presentations to uplift the students’ self-esteem and motivated them to keep focus on their set goals to achieve them.

The counsellor wishes to thank the following persons for their assistance in contributing meaningfully to making the days’ events a reality: Management of K.F.C, Bottlers Ltd, Audrey Thompson, Watson Stewart and Allan’s Bakery. The following teachers also worked as a team in organizing in different areas: Sue-Ann Lewis, Vernette McDowall and Kenneth Audain, and Head of Department Cheryl Shortte. In addition, the counselling department extends many thanks to the area representative and Deputy Prime Minister Sir Louis Straker for donating a computer to the counselor’s office to assist in maintaining the planned counselling programme.

The following second formers will be awarded certificates for their effort: Larisa Collis, Natholyn Prescod, Denielle Bascombe, Chad Edwards, Yannick Delpesche, Delina Butcher, Lemiesha Baptiste, Masheair Charles, Augustus Warren, Nickisha Wilson, Alston Primus, Deneka Baptiste, Denzil Baptiste, Josiann Richardson, Ray-L Matthews, Kenson Edwards, Tilos Guy, Lorenzo Cordice, Nedisha Stephens, Ian Delpesche, Eurunie Stephens, Oneil Malcolm, Indira Lewis , Akeem Roberts, Jamie Williams, Clemott Stapleton, Renson Bryon, Lenmore Bruce, Romaldo McMillan.
