Georgetown Music Fest a success

The organizers of last weekend’s Georgetown Music Festival may be on to something.{{more}}

The fund-raising festival drew rave reviews from the small but appreciative audience, most of whom were of the view that the event should be placed on the list of annual activities in the community.

The festival, organized by the Georgetown Charity Outreach Organization, was held in an effort to raise funds for the continued construction of the St. Benedict’s Day Nursery and Children’s Home, which was put on hold due to the lack of funds.

Featured at the festival, which took place on Saturday at the Georgetown Secondary School was the Denzil Bacchus Blues and Rock Band featuring Patches Knights.

The band brought a mix of blues, soul and rock to the school’s auditorium, with their performance mirroring that of their previous performance at the recently held Bequia Music Festival.

Three members of the St. Benedict’s Steel Band wowed the audience with their rendition of the National Anthem, then came back to perform a stirring set dedicated to reggae legend Bob Marley.

Soca artistes Alla G, D’ Landlord and Fireman Hooper also performed, along with reggae artistes Abuza and Jah Brim Stone.

The festival also featured dances from the Girls’ High School Veloxian Dancers, Replacement Dancers, and Cross Over Dancers.

Addressing the gathering before the festival, President of the Organization Georgelle Dabriel indicated that it was the festival’s first fund-raising outing and said that there were other events planned.

She said that apart from the St. Benedict’s Day Nursery and Children’s Home, the seven-month-old organization plans to also hold charity events for other institutions such as the Salvation Army and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Red Cross Society.

Head of the St. Benedict’s Day Nursery and Children’s Home Sister Nyra Ann Pojette, who also spoke at the festival, thanked the organization, the performers and those who turned out for making the festival a reality and for contributing to the construction of the home.

Plans are in the works for a dance off, a town fair and a number of sporting events to raise funds by the organization.
