Mariners Hotel donates to Mental Health Centre

A LEADING HOTEL here has come to the assistance of the Mental Health Centre.

On Wednesday, January 13, Fitzroy Glasgow, General Manager of The Mariners Hotel, handed over 32 mattresses and beds to the health facility.{{more}}

On Monday, January 4, one wing of the hospital was damaged by fire, causing the evacuation of over 70 residents.

According to Glasgow, the hotel is currently undergoing some renovations and new items had been ordered. A decision had been taken to sell the units, but upon hearing what had taken place, the hotel decided to offer some assistance.

An advertisement for the sale of the items had already been placed, but was quickly pulled.

“Not too often do we have the opportunity to make an impact on someone’s life,” Glasgow said.

He expressed his disappointment that the television sets and toilets were already all gone.

Nevertheless, Glasgow expressed his satisfaction with being able to make a donation to a needy cause.

“We would like to be recognized as good corporate citizens,” the General Manager said.

Jacqueline Hadaway, departmental sister at the Mental Health Centre, in acknowledging the kind gesture, said that the items donated were primarily the ones destroyed in the fire.

Hadaway said that overcrowding in the male ward had been a problem and that even with the additional 32 beds, it was not going to be sufficient to accommodate the over 140 male patients.

“Even with the donations, we are still going to be short,” she said.

She spoke of the long standing relationship between Mariners Hotel and the facility as she expressed her gratitude for the assistance.
