Festival Committee planning to bring attention back to Georgetown

The North Central Windward Community of Georgetown will again become a major centre of attraction as it once was when sugar was king.{{more}}

This as the Georgetown Festival Committee was launched on Saturday June 12th 2009 at the Georgetown Community Centre Hard Court.

Speaking at the Official Ceremony, Founder of the Organization, Kenroy Johnson said he returned from university with many bright ideas such as this one and was happy that it is materializing.

He said the festival is one that will celebrate life in the community of Georgetown. The festival is aimed at presenting a package that will bring attention to the area thereby providing an avenue for a cultural awakening and attracting tourists to the area.

Johnson said persons living in the North and North Central Windward Constituencies can become members as well as persons who have links to the area. He said in spite of the negative remarks made about the Organization, he is quite certain that the Organization will be around for a long time because it was initiated by the people and runs across the age and experience spectrum.

He thanked the business community for supporting the festival and urged them to continue to do so for the longevity of it.

Minister of Rural Transformation, Selmon Walters said that there are a lot of activities out there that distract young people and this Organization will help to channel the young people in the right direction. He said it would create employment, promote transformation and expose young people to creative arts.

Minister Walters said this Organization can assist the Ministry of Education by expanding the revolution beyond the classroom. He congratulated the committee and hoped that this Festival Organization will mark a meaningful activity on the calendar of Georgetown.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Vincy Homecoming Committee, Ellsworth John said it was a pleasure for him to be associated with the Organization. He said persons must learn to understand to unite for each other’s benefit. He urged persons to support the Georgetown Festival Committee especially during festival week.

The festival will commence on Friday October 30th with an Award Ceremony, Saturday October 31st is slated for Festival of Creative Arts with the focus being on fashion with Ms. Georgetown Festival 2009. The School’s Gospel Festival is set for Sunday November 1st. Activities will continue on Thursday November 5th with Guy Fawkes Cultural Explosion. The Village Olympics is slated for Friday November 6th.

The program will culminate on Saturday November 7th with the Community Cook Out at Rabacca.
