Campden Park Technical Institute hosts open day

The Campden Park Technical Institute (CPTI), is working diligently with the NTA Heart Trust, of Jamaica, on becoming an accredited institution. According to Principal Martin Williams, as he addressed members of the media, at the institute’s first Open Day event on Friday, May 15.{{more}}

“In the next year or so, we’ll be ready to be offered up for accreditation,” Williams confided, and explained that it would be quite an achievement for the CPTI. Another achievement for the institution, is the introduction of two new courses, beginning in September, in Plumbing/Pipe Fitting and Furniture/Cabinet Making.

Attendees were treated to displays of students’ work, live demonstrations and a tour of the institution. With a teaching staff of 10, and 153 students, the CPTI offers courses in Electrical Installation, Auto Mechanics and Small Engine Repair, Data Operations, Food Preparation, and Food and Beverage Service.

Additionally, students are exposed to Language and Communication, Calculation and Computation, Information Technology, Technical Drawing, and General and Technical Studies. The CPTI caters to secondary school age students, but is also open to those who are older. Williams expressed, that anyone of any age, in search of enhancing their practical skills, can apply to the CPTI.

In welcoming remarks, head of the organizing committee, Olive Allen, explained that showcasing student skills and informing the public of the programmes offered by the CPTI, were the main objectives of the Open Day.

Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT, Data Operations student Nickasha Burke, related that she has learnt quite a lot in her time at the CPTI, and has plans to pursue a career along that path. “I’m a fan of computers… Technology is increasing!” (JSV)
