Burke wins ECGC Home Economics Competition

Rhealyn Burke, a student of the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown, is the winner of the 16th ECGC (Eastern Caribbean Group of Companies) Home Economics Competition. Burke took home a trophy and $1,000 for her dish: “Gateaux Deluxe”.{{more}}

The closing ceremony, which took place on Thursday, 23rd April, at the Peace Memorial Hall, had twenty five student finalists from twelve schools competing for the grand prize.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, ECGC Marketing Manager Martin La Borde congratulated the students on their efforts. “Seeing young men and women working hard and being engaged in activities is a good sign,” he said.

Also congratulating the students, Senior Education Officer Carlton Hall made note of the progress being made in the Home Economics subject area. Hall, who mentioned that previously Home Economics was offered to those who were “academically challenged,” stated that that is no longer the case and that it has become a subject which involves all students from all backgrounds.

Hall also mentioned that the Ministry of Education is very serious about the “idea of Home Economics and excellence in culinary skills” in St. Vincent. He also expressed his hopes of having the students’ work be exported with the help of the ECGC, “taking it beyond food preparation into the field of entrepreneurship.”

The finals of the competition took place on Thursday, 23 April, 2009. Each student had to cook two meals from categories of their choice. There were six categories.

Second place went to Teleka Baptiste of the Sandy Bay Secondary School who won a trophy and $700, and third place was awarded to Julesha Alexander of the Union Island Secondary School. She was rewarded $300 and a trophy for her efforts. (OS)
