SVG’s Heritage captured on stamps

The heritage of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, captured on postage stamps, is on display for the final day today, Friday, March 6th, as part of an Exhibition featuring local prominent figures, athletes, plants, pottery and animals.{{more}}

The Exhibition is just one of many events scheduled this month as part of National Heroes and Heritage Month.

The Exhibition, held at the Peace Memorial Hall, in Kingstown, began on Monday with an official launch, under the theme “Appreciating Our Identity- Preserving Our Heritage with pride”.

According to Cultural Officer Anthony Theobalds, the Exhibition was held to raise awareness of this country’s heritage, as depicted by the stamps, and instill a level of pride among Vincentians.

Held in collaboration with the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Philatelic Association, the displays feature this country’s indigenous heritage, under the headings “Utensils”, “Endangered Species”, “Medicinal Plants”, “Famous Sports Figures” and the “Year of the Elderly”, among other things.

National Heroes and Heritage Month continues with activities around St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Tomorrow, the African Heritage Foundation will host a film presentation at the University of the West Indies Open Campus in Kingstown.

Next week, National Hero, the Right Excellent Joseph Chatoyer is expected to be profiled, along with a press launch of the Calypso Book on Tuesday, a memorial celebration on the life of E.T Joshua on Thursday at Sion Hill, culminating with the Wreath Laying Ceremony at Dorsetshire Hill on Saturday (National Heroes Day).

Other events scheduled this month include heritage clubs’ activities, radio quizzes, poetry and cultural evenings and athletic events.

A number of schools, non-governmental and other organizations have also scheduled events throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines to commemorate the month.
