Minister Baptiste donates to elderly in Largo Heights

Some elderly members of the Largo Heights community should now be more mobile, thanks to the Largo Heights Community Development Organization (LCDO), and the Representative for West Kingstown, Rene Baptiste.{{more}}

Baptiste handed over four walking sticks and one wheelchair to the LCDO last Friday at the Primus’ Shop in Largo Heights. The short handing over ceremony brought out members of the community including a Justice of the Peace and representative of the West Kingstown area council board.

Speaking at the event, Baptiste expressed the importance of taking care of the elderly in the community. Stating that they should not be neglected, the representative also said that the contribution was a result of “delivering on your promise and engaging with persons in the community.”

According to Baptiste, the LCDO, a community organization which started in March of 2008, recognised the need for the wheelchairs and walking sticks for its elderly members. The items were then donated through friends and sources in Canada, Baptiste said.

Accepting the items on the LCDO’s behalf, PRO Nicholas Olliverre thanked the parliamentary representative for her support and wished her the best. Justice of the Peace Glenna Greaves also extended gratitude to the Minister. “It is a heartfelt gesture on our representative’s part. Over the years there hasn’t been anything we have asked for that she did not come through for us,” she said.

The LCDO, an active community organization, is currently engaged in a number of projects, including a water project to bring water to homes in the Upper Largo Heights area and an expansion of the Largo Heights Police Band Room to house the steel orchestra. (OS)
