International Hospital for children gets $7,000 boost

The dream of building an International Hospital for children came one step closer to reality on Tuesday, January, 27, 2009, when a cheque valued at Canadian, $7000 was handed over to the Rotary Club of St Vincent South by the Canadian based group, Gem of the Antilles.{{more}}

In his address at the handing over ceremony, Rotarian Cecil McKie said that since last year, the club has been working feverishly towards making the hospital a reality. The special event took place at the Beach Combers Hotel Restaurant and Health Spa.

McKie further stated that the million-dollar walk endured by George “Ole George” Daniel was part of the club’s efforts to raise the money for the hospital. It was then that Gems, a group consisting of Vincentians and other Caribbean nationals, jumped on board and decided to help with the project.

Bernard John, a close friend of the club, and this country’s former Consul General in Canada, was asked to collect the cheque on behalf of the Rotary Club.

It was through the proceeds of a concert held in Canada last November that Gems was able to raise the $7,000.

President of the Rotary, Ashley Caine, thanked Gems for their donation and noted that a contribution of such magnitude would help to strengthen their resolve on achieving their real objective. He added that the hospital would help to make a difference in the lives of children, not only in St Vincent, but also throughout the rest of the Caribbean.

Gem of the Antilles has in the past made contributions to the House of Hope, School for Children with Special Needs and several other charitable organistations.
