NSPD celebrates 21st Anniversary

The National Society of Persons with disAbilities (NSPD) is celebrating its Twenty-first Anniversary in the month of June 2008 with a program of activities, under the theme, “Building a Network for Action.” {{more}}

The Society began its activities with a Church Service of Thanksgiving shared with the shut-ins at Methodist Church Kingstown, on Thursday, 5th June, 2008. At the church service the society awarded seven scholarships from the Melanie McKenzie Scholarship Fund to students with disabilities, including two in secondary school.

Prizes for the Secondary School essay Competition were also handed over by His Excellency Sir Frederick Ballantyne. The winners were: first Utamu Rose, St. Vincent Grammar School, who won one Laptop Computer, second was John Rickards, of the St. Vincent Grammar School, who won $500.00 and third was Jennique Glynn, of the Bequia Community High School, who won $300.

The prizes were donated by GECCU, Courts, the Social Investment Fund (SIF) and the Taiwanese Embassy.

From Monday, 9th to Thursday, 12th June, members of the society embarked on an Awareness Programs in four primary schools: The Windsor Primary, Kingstown Government, Lodge Village and Lowmans Leeward, educating students on disability issues.

The highlight for the month is the Fundraising Dinner at the Prime Minister Residence on Saturday 28th June 2008.
