‘Birdman’ is Courts Comedy champion
Being a stand up comedian is arguably one of the most difficult jobs in the world.
However, the six comedians battling for supremacy in the Courts Organization of East Caribbean States (OECS) Comedy Finals at the Aquatic Club made it look easy, and it was Slybert âBirdmanâ Gordon who sat through most of his routine and delivered the goods to be crowned champ.{{more}}
The funny man, who hails from Antigua, earned a $40,000 contract to be the OECS Courts Mascot for one year. He will take over duties in August from last yearâs winner, Vincentian Maurice âThe Aquarian Bornâ Horne.
Patrons were totally blown away on Saturday, June 21, by the âBirdmanâsâ comical material as he portrayed a television newscaster with a massive pair of glasses.
One joke that had the crowd on their feet was when Gordon said, âThe government of St Vincent will be importing more cows and placing them in the police stations to beef up security.â
The Jamaican-born, who has been living in Antigua for the past 10 years, said that he always had a passion for making people laugh and that it was always his dream to do comedy on a big stage.

he needed to do his original routine. Gordon said he kept telling himself
that he was going to win, but when he did not receive his luggage the
thought died momentarily. âI just said to myself I came so far and I have
to represent myself and country, so I just had some of my friends help me, and look where I am now,â he explained.
Vincentian Shevrell McMillan had to settle for the second position, but certainly proved himself a great comedian in front of his home crowd. McMillan possessed great energy, and from the time he hit the stage, he served a bellyful of laughs, which received a standing ovation. Christopher Umeri from Dominica came in third position.
The packed audience was not easy on the others who failed to leave a lasting impression on the crowd. The boos were so loud, that some of the comedians could hardly hear themselves.
The other competitors were Arlene Renne from St Lucia, Elston Braithwaite from St Kitts and Kareem Alexis from Grenada.
Mid-show entertainment included: Skarpyon, Bomani, the Avenue Dancers and Maurice Horne, who proved once again he was the King of Comedy in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Next yearâs finals will be held in St Lucia.
