Searchlight Social Club makes donation to Sans Souci family

Just one week after announcing a scholarship fund in the name of a slain Sandy Bay girl, the Searchlight Social Club (SSC) was once again in action, with the donation of food and cash to a needy Sans Souci family.{{more}}

On Saturday, May 31st, members of the club journeyed along the Windward coast with a food basket consisting of food and household items, which was presented to Nurissa Smart, who came to the club’s attention when her son Junior was featured on the front page of the March 7th edition of Searchlight newspaper.

During the March 6th bomb threat at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital, Smart, who was at the time a patient, was forced to flee the hospital, along with the other patients and staff.

Further investigation revealed that the eight-year-old student of the Georgetown Government School and his family were in dire need of assistance. The SSC, just two months old, made the decision to lend a helping hand.

Fundraisers in the form of a barbecue and car wash on May 3rd and 10th were the main source of income, along with contributions from business places and individuals.

A cash donation of $257 was also made to the family, on behalf of a nurse residing in Canada, who read of Smart’s plight in Searchlight.

At Saturday’s handing over, president of the SSC Junior Jarvis said that the club was dedicated to making changes in communities wherever possible, and that it was good to see that something positive came out of the March 6th experience.

Matriarch of the home Nurissa thanked the club for its contribution, which she said would go a long way in providing for her children and grandchildren.

Last week, the SSC announced that it had created a scholarship fund in the name of six-year-old Rosanna Shallow, who was murdered one year ago in Sandy Bay.

The first recipient of the fund will be Rosanna’s sister Kimberly, who will receive a one year scholarship from the club.(JJ)
