PM to cut out abuse of government vehicles

The abuse of government vehicles by public servants is a cause of concern, and Permanent Secretaries of the various Ministries are to be written to about it.{{more}}

As he addressed the media last Monday at Cabinet Room, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves spoke of the pressures caused by the escalating oil prices, and said that some public servants are using government vehicles instead of using their own – a cost cutting measure that is being frowned at by government.

“I have asked the Cabinet Secretary and the Director General of Finance and Planning (to) write the permanent secretaries and the head of state entities on the question,” Dr Gonsalves said.

Dr Gonsalves, addressing the subject of the pressures caused by rising oil prices, said that while the state has to continue to take steps, individuals must also make necessary changes.

He said that government will continue to examine alternative energy options and do what can be done to help ease the burden, but said that the rising oil prices is a problem that must be faced.

“It is undeniable that the increase in fuel prices hurt the economy and our competitiveness and will bring additional challenges to people,” he said. (KJ)
