Monday, June 9, is National Day of Prayer

Monday, June 9th, has been designated a national day of prayer in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}

Speaking at a press conference at the Methodist Church Hall on Thursday, May 29th, chairman of the National Day of Prayer committee Kenyatta Lewis said the people of St Vincent and the Grenadines have affirmed that our nation is founded on the belief and the supremacy of God and the freedom and dignity of man.

The Christian community, he confessed, has been tardy in not calling the nation together earlier. He declared that God, our conscience and the future we desire demand that we do so now. Lewis said they are coming together now because there needs to be a “Spiritual intervention in the lives of our nation and our people”. He claimed that they are not coming together because things are bad, but as a people of faith that is what they are called to do.

He said the committee is working and praying for June 9th to be declared a national holiday, and wants schools, business places and government offices to set aside one hour on Monday as a time of prayer and fasting. Lewis is also urging families to begin their day in devotional prayer.

The committee is asking media houses to have live prayer sessions on their stations between 6am and 6pm on that day. They also want all churches to hold a time of fasting and repentance on Saturday 7th, and Sunday, 8th, June.

“I am encouraging persons to support this national event,” he said. Lewis stated that some of the things they will be praying for are the economy, government, youths and the decay in the social fabric. He said there is a need for a spirtual intervention in the lives of our people. He noted that their mission is to mobilize the Christian community and the nation to pray. The committee also wants every Vincentian to see the need for private and corporate prayer.

Meanwhile Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs

Nathaniel Williams said his Ministry is endorsing this initiative by the Christian community. He is encouraging the nation to support this event.(VM)
