Cadets attend train the trainer course

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cadet Force last Saturday held an opening ceremony for a ‘Train the Trainer’ course.

The training workshop took place at the P’tani Resort at Argyle. The sessions were conducted by the Barbados Cadet Association.{{more}}

Colonel Dwight Lewis, speaking on the structure of the St Vincent and Grenadines Cadet Force, said that the ogranisation is now governed by a new Act. He said the current structure has a policy making body headed by the Cadet Force Advisory Committee. Lewis said with this Act, they are able to develop new structures which did not exist before. He said that “we are in a better position to do a lot of things that we wanted to do so many years ago”. He noted that they now have the legal muscle and authority to act.

He urged the cadets present to get a copy of the new Act and study it. This he said will help them to understand how the organization works and functions. With the new Act, the cadet force can now train persons between the ages of 11 and 20. Lewis said after age 20, the cadet will be transformed into an adult position. Before the new Act came into being, at the age of 20, cadets had to resign from the force.

Major Patrick Skeete of the Barbados Cadet Association said that the ‘Train the Trainers’ programme is to standardize what cadets do and boost the confidence and competence of the trainees. He said he hopes that whatever the cadets learn, they “will pass it on to others to make a stronger force”. The course was sponsored by the Barbados Cadet Association and the United Nations Development Programme. (VM)
